"Narayanni’s constantly evolving buffet features a diverse selection including sweet squash, mint chutney and papadums — dishes combining African and Indian influences."
"This family-run restaurant has an extensive, constantly evolving buffet of South African/Indian food. Matriarch Selva Naidoo focuses on redefining traditional curries by nixing cream-based sauces for clear broths. While the switch may make your meal healthier, it doesn’t affect the rich, intricate tastes of masala chicken or wild salmon chutney.
Celiacs and vegans are also welcome to dig in with carefully labeled gluten-free and vegan options. Sweet squash, delicious couscous and crunchy kale are among the vegetarian dishes.
Meanwhile, the papadums could possibly be the ultimate in Indian snacks — oh-so-satisfying lentil crisps are completed when dipped in fiery mint or sweet mango chutneys.
The food is great, but it’s the warm, friendly atmosphere with a cozy fireplace that really makes Narayanni’s feel like home; that is, if your home happens to include a mother-figure constantly trying to feed you."

Scott Lingley / See Magazine:
"Narayanni’s is a — if not “the” — new arrival on Edmonton’s Indian food scene, but their take on subcontinental cuisine (by way of South Africa) with its emphasis on organic and locally sourced ingredients and de-emphasis on creamy and/or buttery sauces sets them apart from the chafing dishes full of butter chicken and saag paneer beckoning from every curry-scented nook in the city."
"The food and service are both incredible and I can easily say this is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire city."
Narayannis, an authentic South African/East Indian food features the highest quality of food in any restaurant that i have ever attended anywhere, anytime!! What really stands out, is the freshness of every dish, and the addictive qualities that will make you want to return.
The staff from this family owned business are also extremely attentive and friendly, and the cost is very reasonable.
Even after completing my meal, the coffee that i ordered was custom brewed with fresh, high quality, beans that were ground just prior to brewing, exceeded the quality of any coffee in even the highest quality establishments that I have attended."
"...they excelled themselves for New Year’s, going above and beyond — Dec. 31, 2011 at Narayanni’s will go in my notebook as one of the five best restaurant meals I’ve ever had."
Twyla Campbell / CBC Radio:
"ll the foods here are based on the Ayurvedic food philosophy, which revolves around balance through six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. The heat of the chillies is tempered by the sweetness of the chutneys, the sour of the lemon pickle, the pungency of the spices, the astringent zip of cilantro and ginger. Everything comes together in a satisfying melding of flavours."
"...I feel like I'm eating my mom's home-cooking every time I eat here..."
"Amazing! ...As soon as you walk in you know you are in the right place. The interior is gorgeous and goes oh-so-well with the richness of the food. We were told that everything is homemade and you can really taste it! Every dish had a remarkable flavour."
"Large buffet with a good selection. Spicy, but not overpowering. Local ingredients, which is awesome. The pistachio latte is a must."
"The best East Indian food I've had anywhere... unlike and superior to all of Edmonton's East Indian eateries that I've tried over the years... The spicing is both subtle and delicious."
"This cozy, family run gem is full of warmth. Not just the food, but the loving way we were attended to. You can see the care that goes into everything. "
Alan Kellogg / Edmonton Journal:
"...Narayanni’s is in a league of its own, guaranteed to startle and delight the most jaded, turmeric-stained veterans of the Indian buffet lines."
Liane Faulder / Edmonton Journal:
"The secret to her excellent and quickly prepared dishes is found in Selva's pantry, and in the wide range of dry ingredients (backed by a freezer full of protein) that she keeps on hand... Using a wide selection of Indian flavourings, from turmeric to cardamom to fenugreek to coriander, Selva concocts her own magic masala, a spice combination that adds punch to everything from meat to vegetable stews."
"Not often one goes to a buffet and find that there is NOT one, single item that you don't like! Tried a spoon of this and a taste of that (had to try everything). Everything was fresh, tasty and fantastic. Can't say enough great things about this place."
"This restaurant is in a league of it's own, setting the bar very high... The lamb and chicken are free range, and Alberta raised, and the vegetables are mainly organic... They have a fabulous pastry chef who prepares the most divine desserts...white chocolate raspberry torte, the most decadent chocolate mousse, and tiramisu that will challenge any Italian restaurant in the city. The pistachio chai is to die for. No other indian restaurant will give you the flavour and quality of cuisine as Narayanni's."
